Northern Districts Orchid Society will host the Conference in conjunction the Western Australian Regional Orchid Organisation from 10-16 September, 2012 Perth, Western Australia. The Conference is also being held to coincide with the Kings Park Wildflower Festival which runs for the full month of September.
For those of you who have not been to Perth before, Kings Park overlooks the Swan River and the Perth CBD giving you spectacular views over the city and the river below. September is the opportune time to visit Western Australia as not only are our colourful wildflowers in full bloom in Kings Park and throughout the state but in the south west and areas around Perth, native terrestrial orchids are in abundance too, and are renowned world wide for their uniqueness.
The extensive conference program will include
- International and Australian speakers
- workshops, which will include practical advice and potting demonstrations from experienced growers and experts in their field
- International and Australian vendors
- proposed tours to include home visits to local growers as well as native orchid and wildflower tours around Perth and the south west.
Combine all this with the displays of orchids and we hope it will be a conference not to be missed.
Whilst we are aware of the quarantine requirements in relation to plant movements in and out of Western Australia, the Conference Committee will be working in conjunction with the WA Agricultural Department and AQIS to seek a good resolution. We realise it is usual for interstate growers and societies that wish to participate and enter in the Orchid Show to only be able to bring cut flowers due to the quarantine restrictions on plants.
To assist growers and societies who wish to bring cut flowers we intend to produce a video clip demonstrating how to pack cut flowers for transport and what is required. This will be available via our website in the near future.
We hope that having seen the video, growers will see that the task is not too difficult and we look forward to having interstate participation in the orchid show itself.
Our website is now available for viewing, and although it is in the early stages of information there is some valuable information that will assist growers who are considering attending the Conference.
The Conference Committee cordially invites all orchid enthusiasts to consider registering their interest. To be placed on the mailing list, interested persons can either email the Secretary at aocconference@dodo.com.au, the Webmaster at waos@iinet.net.au, or alternatively by post to The Secretary, 19th AOC Conference & Show 2012, PO Box 576, MORLEY WA 6062. It would assist us if those interested provided their full name, home address and contact phone number as well as the email address if they have one.
